NEW DELHI: The opposition INDIA bloc is set to organize a “Maha rally” at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on March 31 to “protect the country’s interests and democracy”, announced AAP leader Gopal Rai.
The announcement comes after the arrest of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday in connection with a money-laundering case linked to an excise policy.
Kejriwal was taken into ED custody until March 28 by a court on Friday. “We will hold a ‘maha rally’ at Ramlila Maidan on March 31 against what is happening in the country. The top leadership of the INDIA bloc will participate in the event,” Rai, the AAP’s Delhi convenor, Rai said.
“Democracy and the country are in danger. All INDIA bloc parties will take part in this ‘maha rally’ to safeguard the country’s interests and democracy,” he added.
The AAP leader accused the ruling BJP of orchestrating arrests under false pretenses, alleging a lack of evidence in the excise policy case against Kejriwal. Rai claimed that individuals were coerced to implicate Kejriwal and make financial contributions to the BJP. He underscored the collective efforts of the opposition to counter such practices and protect the country’s democratic values.
“It is not only about Arvind Kejriwal. The entire opposition is being threatened. Either they use money to buy people or scare them by using the ED and the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation). If someone refuses to bow, they get them arrested under false cases,” Rai alleged.
Arvinder Singh Lovely, the Delhi unit chief of the Congress, criticized the uneven playing field for opposition parties, citing the freezing of accounts and the arrest of a chief minister.
“The March 31 ‘maha rally’ will not only be a political one but a call to save the country’s democracy and raise voices against the BJP-led Centre,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bhartiya Janata Party workers, in the presence of Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, staged a demonstration and burned effigies of Arvind Kejriwal.
The demonstration was led by BJP leader Praveen Khandelwal, who, was present with a large number of supporters at Santnagar Chowk, Ranibagh in Delhi.
Khandelwal told ANI that BJP workers will continue to protest until Kejriwal resigns from the post.
“Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is continuously violating the law. Law is the same for all. ED sent him nine summons even after that he did not consider it necessary to go answer questions. Today, we have gathered here because, after the allegations against Kejriwal, he should resign. Delhi BJP has decided that we will leave no stone unturned to oust Kejriwal until he resigns,” he said.
