Bengaluru: The stage is set for the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Friday when 14 of the 28 parliamentary seats in Karnataka will go to the polls.

The stage is set for the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Friday when 14 of the 28 parliamentary seats in Karnataka will go to the polls.

The BJP, which managed to win 11 out of these 14 seats in southern Karnataka is hoping for a clean sweep this time.

The Congress party on the other hand is buoyed by the victory in the assembly elections held in 2023 and is relying on its guarantee schemes to upset the apple cart of BJP. Though, vying for the post of the chief minister, CM Siddaramaiah and Dy CM D.K. Shivakumar, have buried the hatchet to ensure a Congress victory.

Countering this, 91-year-old former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda has launched a spirited campaign in the region to ensure the Vokkaliga vote bank stays with the BJP-JD-S alliance.

Shivakumar’s brother D.K. Suresh was the only person to register a victory for the Congress in the entire state in the last general election. The BJP has nominated Dr. C.N. Manjunath for this high profile seat.

Following the tussle between the top leaders and the ground level party workers, incidents of stabbing and attacks, the State Election Commission has doubled the para-military forces in the parliamentary segment. Sources said that the Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha seat will witness a record turnout of voters and whoever wins the margin is going to be very narrow.

Bengaluru South is considered a fortress of the BJP as its candidates have registered victories since the 1991 general elections. The last time the Congress won this seat was in 1989.

Not taking any chances, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had recently held a roadshow in the constituency to ensure the victory of the BJP candidate Tejasvi Surya. On the other hand, Sowmya Reddy, daughter of Minister for Transport Ramalinga Reddy, is hopeful of her victory. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had addressed a public meeting in the Bengaluru South constituency during her visit to Karnataka.

The Bengaluru North voters have been electing BJP candidates continuously since 2004. Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje is the BJP candidate while the Congress has fielded academician and former Rajya Sabha member Prof. M.V. Rajeev Gowda. The BJP is eying a victory this time as well while the Congress is hoping that voters would give a chance to Gowda, who was a professor at the IIM-B.

In the Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha seat, the Congress wants to ensure the victory of its only Muslim candidate in the state Mansoor Ali Khan. However, there is an allegation that the top Muslim leaders of the Congress did not take any interest in campaigning for him. BJP candidate P.C. Mohan who has won the seat three consecutive times is confident of winning for the fourth time.

Sources said that there is a close contest in the Hassan Lok Sabha seat and the Congress is hopeful of winning the seat. Former PM H.D. Deve Gowda’s grandson Prajwal Revanna is contesting from the seat as the NDA candidate for the second time. M. Shreyas Patel, grandson of former Congress MP G. Puttaswamy Gowda, is the Congress candidate. The JD-S has held the seat since 2004.

Former CM H.D. Kumaraswamy is pitched as the NDA candidate for the Mandya Lok Sabha seat. The Congress has fielded Venkataramane Gowda aka Star Chandru. Dy CM D.K. Shivakumar has been claiming that he will win this seat.

The Congress had won the seat in the 2013 bye-election. It had also won in the 1999 and 2004 general elections which reflects the strong roots of the party there. In the 2009, 2014, and 2018 by-elections, the JD-S had won the seat. The JD-S had managed to win only one seat out of eight assembly segments in the 2023 assembly elections while the Congress won the rest. However, political heavyweight Kumaraswamy is expecting a big win this time.

The contest in the Mysuru-Kodagu parliamentary seat has become interesting following the use of the Vokkaliga card by the Congress against the royal scion Yaduveer Wadiyar, who is contesting from the BJP. CM Siddaramaiah’s confidante M. Laxman is the Congress candidate.

The Congress has big hopes in the Chamarajanagar reserve Lok Sabha seat. CM Siddaramaiah has taken it as a personal mission to ensure the victory of its candidate Sunil Bose, son of Minister for Social Welfare. The inclination of senior BJP leader and sitting MP V. Srinivas Prasad towards the Congress is upsetting the BJP candidate S. Balaraj, a close associate of former CM B.S. Yediyurappa. The BJP had managed to win the seat for the first time in 2019 by 1,817 votes.

In the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru seat, the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Kota Srinivas Poojari is the BJP candidate. He is taking on senior Congress leader Jayaprakash Hegde. Sources say that though there is a fight, the BJP will sail through.

The Dakshina Kannada LS seat is considered a BJP stronghold. Captain Brijesh Chowta is the BJP candidate. Chowta is taking on Padmaraj, a new face from the Congress party. The BJP has been winning the seat since 1991 and is expecting a big win from here.

There is a close fight between the Congress and the BJP in the Chikkaballapur and Kolar Lok Sabha seats. The BJP’s Dr. K. Sudhakar is facing young face Raksha Ramaiah, who hails from the powerful Ramaiah family in Bengaluru. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had addressed a massive public rally in Chikkaballapur.

The Kolar reserve Lok Sabha seat is also witnessing a tough fight between the NDA and the Congress candidates. However, the Congress has remained a divided house. A cabinet minister, three MLAs and two MLCs of the Congress party created a high drama of tendering their resignations over ticket allotment.

The Congress has chosen a new face K.V. Gowtham and the JD-S has fielded M. Mallesh Babu as the NDA candidate.

The Congress is hopeful of wrestling the Chitradurga Lok Sabha reserve seat. Former Dy CM and Dalit leader Govind Karjol is contesting the seat from the BJP. B.N. Chandrappa is the Congress candidate. The BJP has won the seat twice since 1952. Sitting BJP MP, Union Minister of State A. Narayanaswamy, was denied a ticket.

Hoping to wrest the seat, the Congress had brought Priyanka Gandhi to Chitradurga to address a massive rally. However, the BJP is relying on a Prime Minister Narendra Modi wave.

New Delhi: SC set to pass directions on pleas seeking mandatory EVM-VVPAT tally

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is slated to pass certain directions on Wednesday on a batch of petitions seeking mandatory cross-verification of the votes cast in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips.

The Supreme Court is slated to pass certain directions

As per the causelist published on the website of the apex court, the issue is listed before a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta “for directions” on April 24.

Last week, the Bench had reserved its verdict on a batch of public interest litigations (PILs) in the matter, observing that official acts are normally presumed to be done validly under the Indian Evidence Act and everything done by the Election Commission cannot be suspected.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, the second highest law officer of the Centre, had slammed the petitioners for periodically filing PILs on the eve of elections saying that the democratic choice of a voter is being turned into a joke.

The SG added that the issue has already been settled by the apex court with the dismissal of the pleas seeking similar relief in the past.

In April 2019, the Supreme Court ordered the ECI to increase the VVPAT slips from one Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) per Assembly constituency to five. It had issued guidelines for mandatory verification of VVPAT slips, out of five randomly selected polling stations, after completing the final round of counting votes recorded in EVMs.

A VVPAT is considered an independent verification system for voting machines, allowing voters to verify whether they have correctly cast their votes.

Bengaluru: Bommai, DK Shivakumar trade barbs over PM Modi’s ‘infiltrator’ remark

Bengaluru: Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in the state, the BJP and the Congress is Karntaka on Monday engaged in a bitter war of words over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘infiltrator’ remark made at a rally in Rajasthan’s Banswara on Sunday.

Bommai, DK Shivakumar trade barbs over PM Modi's 'infiltrator' remark

“The Congress manifesto says they will calculate the gold held by the mothers and sisters, and distribute that property. Distribute it to whom? Among ‘infiltrators’ and families with more children. Manmohan Singh’s government had said that Muslims have the first right on the country’s assets,” the Prime Minister had said during the rally.

Attacking the BJP over the PM’s remarks, Karnataka Deputy CM and state Congress President D.K.Shivakumar accused the party of torturing the minority community.

Rebutting Shivakumar’s claims, former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP candidate for the Haveri Lok Sabha seat, Basavaraj Bommai, claimed that the population in the Muslim countries is on the decline, but it is increasing in Bharat.

“Our state is a home to all religions. Yet, the BJP is creating a situation where one community is tortured to such an extent that they are forced to leave the country,” Shivakumar said in Bengaluru.

“The BJP leaders are claiming that they will change the Constitution. We are acting as per the Constitution. In this background, there is no room for protecting anyone who commits a crime,” he added.

Commenting on ‘appeasement’ politics, Shivakumar said the Prime Minister took oath in the name of the Constitution, and he should know that all people are equal in this country. Any discrimination will send out a bad message to the country and the world.

Reacting to Shivakumar’s remarks, Bommai said that if Muslims feel safe anywhere in the world, it is in Bharat.

“The population of Muslims is increasing in India, but decreasing in the other Islamic nations. Shivakumar must understand this first and not make remarks to appease one particular community for votes,” Bommai said.

The number of communal clashes in the state was the highest during the Congress rule which can be proven with evidence, Bommai claimed.

Bird fever in Kerala prompts alert in DK

To address this, special check posts will be established at Talapady, Jalsoor, and Saradka, starting from Monday. These measures are aimed at sanitizing vehicles transporting poultry from Dakshina Kannada to Kerala upon their return to Dakshina Kannada after delivering poultry products.

Dr Arun Kumar, deputy director of the animal husbandry and veterinary services department, stated, “Bird fever has been confirmed in Alapuzha district, Kerala, approximately 400 km from Mangaluru. This is the second reported case in this district. While no cases have been reported in Dakshina Kannada so far, we remain vigilant and will establish check posts at three strategic points.”

He further explained, “Bird fever typically affects migrating birds, but as it is currently summer, migration is less common. The virus can spread from infected chickens to other birds and even to humans, especially those working in poultry farms and meat processing units. However, it does not spread from person to person.”

Chikkaballapura: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 20 said big and powerful people in India and abroad have joined hands to remove him from power.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Addressing a mega public meeting here, he said, “Mothers and sisters have come in a large number here. Your struggle and the challenges you face to nurture your family, Modi has seen this in his house. These days big and powerful people in the country and abroad have united to remove Modi.”

“But, because of Nari Shakti and Maatru Shakti’s blessings and Suraksha kavach (safety armour), Modi is able to move on fighting challenges.”

“Serving mothers, sisters and daughters and protecting them is Modi’s priority,” he said, listing out measures taken by his government for women’s welfare in ten years, like supporting their self help groups and creating ‘Lakhpati Didis’.

Former Minister K Sudhakar is the BJP candidate from Chikkaballapur, while its alliance partner JD(S) has fielded M Mallesh Babu from the neighbouring Kolar. The prime minister said the first phase of voting for Lok Sabha on April 19 has gone in favour of NDA and ‘Viksit Bharat’.

Targeting the INDIA bloc, he said the opposition alliance doesn’t have a leader at present, and has no vision for future, and “their history was of scams.”

Praising JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda who shared the stage with him, for his energy and commitment at the age of 90, Modi said he too draws inspiration from him.

“His (Gowda) commitment towards Karnataka, the pain in his heart for the plight of Karnataka today and the ‘josh’ in his voice, is the testimony for Karnataka’s bright future,” he said, as he thanked Gowda for his “blessings”.

The JD(S) joined the NDA in September last year. Karnataka is going to the polls in two phases. While 14 Lok Sabha segments in the southern parts of the state will vote on April 26, the remaining 14 constituencies in the northern parts will vote in the second phase on May 7.

New Delhi: As the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls began on April 19, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge urged voters to cast their ballots carefully and asserted that a new era of economic empowerment and equal opportunities beckons them. “The fight to protect our Constitution and Democracy begins today,” he said in a post on ‘X’.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge

“My dear citizens, from 21 States and UTs who are voting in the First Phase of the Lok Sabha elections, I request you to carefully cast your vote. A future where NYAY (justice) awaits you. A new era of Economic Empowerment and Equal Opportunities beckons you,” the Congress chief said.

“I am sure you will vote for the ‘jobs revolution’ through YUVA NYAY, rather than a continuation of the past 10 years of record unemployment,” Kharge said. He exuded confidence that people would vote for the guarantees of ‘NAARI NYAY’ which takes concrete measures for the financial independence of women and against the continuation of the backbreaking price rise that has reduced their household savings to a 50-year low.

“I am sure our farmers will vote for KISAAN NYAY, for a legal guarantee of MSP, rather than getting duped by Jumlas of doubling farm income. I am sure the crores of hard-working hands that build this nation, will vote for the agenda of SHRAMIK NYAY, rather than a continuation of an era that has reduced their wages and left them to walk kilometers on highways during the pandemic,” Kharge said in his post.

“I am sure our people belonging to the Dalit, Adivasi, OBC, EWS and Minority communities shall choose HISSEDARI NYAY over an era where they were discriminated through divisive politics and ever-increasing violence against them,” he said.

“When you push that button on the EVM, pause and reflect for a second – Do you want our Institutions to be subverted through dictatorship, or do you want to protect Democracy,” Kharge said.

He said voters would decide India’s destiny. Kharge also extended a warm welcome to all first-time voters. He urged people to go out and vote in large numbers.
