Locals have expressed suspicion that the suspect in the Bengaluru Rameswaram cafe blast case had roamed around Humanabad town a few days ago. The police visited the spot on March 9 and collected information.

Election commissioner Arun Goel steps down weeks before Lok Sabha elections

Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigned from his post on March 9, weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Goel’s resignation has been accepted by the President.

The Union Law Ministry said in a notification that the President had accepted Goel’s resignation. It was not immediately known that why he resigned.

A retired bureaucrat, was a 1985-batch IAS officer of the Punjab cadre. He had joined the Election Commission in November 2022. Following the retirement of Anup Pandey in February and Goel’s resignation, the three-member Election Commission panel has now only Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.

This significant development has come just a week ahead of the expected announcement of Lok Sabha elections schedule.

Prime Minister Modi inaugurates world’s longest twin-lane tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the state-of-the-art Sela Tunnel in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh on March 9. Built with a total cost of Rs 825 crore, the tunnel project is constructed at an altitude of 13,700 feet in West Kameng district on the road connecting Tezpur to Tawang. The foundation stone of the project was laid by PM Modi in February 2019, but its completion was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Twin-lane tunnel

Done by the Border Road Organisation, the Sela project consists of two tunnels and a link road. Tunnel 1 will be 980-metre long single-tube, Tunnel 2 will be 1,555-metre with one bi-lane tube for traffic and one emergency services. The link road between the two tunnels will be 1,200 meters long.

The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity to the Tawang region — long contested by China which describes it as a part of the ancient territory. Sela Pass stays closed for a few winter months. In 1962, Chinese troops had clashed with Indian forces in the region, and significantly, Tawang town was overrun on October 24 that year.

The tunnel will enhance the Indian army’s capabilities at the LAC by ensuing speedy deployment of troops, weapons and machinery to the forward areas along the Sino-India border.

Katapadi: The car lost control and fell into the ditch

Udupi: In a tragic incident, a car in which the driver lost control and fell into a ditch on national highway 66 near Katapadi in Kaup taluk on On Mar.9. Fortunately, the driver of the car escaped unhurt with minor injuries.

The car was on its way to Mangaluru from Udupi when the driver lost control of the car and fell into a nearby ditch after the driver lost control of the vehicle near Kallapu in Katpadi.

There was no major loss of life as the driver was alone in the car. The driver, who was injured in the incident, has been admitted to a hospital by locals.
