New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on March 17 released data received from political parties on electoral bonds, which it had given to the Supreme Court in sealed covers. The ECI in a statement said: “Political parties had filed data on Electoral Bonds in a sealed cover as directed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s interim order dated April 12, 2019, in the said WP No. 880 of 2017. Data so received from political parties was deposited in the Hon’ble Supreme Court without opening sealed covers. In pursuance of the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s order on March 15, 2024, the Registry of the Supreme Court has returned physical copies along with a digitised record of the same in a pen drive in a sealed cover.”

“The Election Commission of India has today uploaded the data received in digitised form from the registry of the Supreme Court on electoral bonds on its website,” the EC added.

In fact, the last documents which were released by the ECI show only raw data related to the date of the bonds, denominations, number of bonds branch of SBI issuing the data, date of receipt and date of credit. The documents did not, however, then disclose the unique numbers of the bonds.

The Trinamool Congress has written to SBI asking for the unique numbers of the bonds so that the party can comply with the Supreme Court’s directions. The BJP has not given any such request to SBI. However, the party has given raw data. Likewise, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has denied getting “any donation via electoral bonds”. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also denied receiving donations via electoral bonds. However, the Congress said it will release raw data given by SBI to the EC.

Ranjith Reddy, a member of parliament from Chevella, left the Bharat Rashtra Samithi(BRS) on March 17 and joined the ruling Congress, dealing another setback to former Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao.

He announced his(unexpected but not unexpected) resignation on his official X account, citing “current political circumstances” as his reason. On the microblogging site, he additionally posted his resignation letter.

“I would like to convey my sincere appreciation for the party’s priceless opportunity to discuss and find solutions for the pressing problems affecting the people living in the former Vikarabad and Ranga Reddy Districts. In his letter of resignation to Mr. Rao, Mr. Reddy stated, “Your faith in my abilities has enabled me to effectively serve the constituents of Chevella, my parliamentary constituency.”

“I am sincerely thankful for your steadfast support throughout this journey. Unfortunately, due to the current political circumstances in the state of Telangana, I have come to the difficult decision to pursue an alternative path. It is with a heavy heart that I hereby submit my resignation from the BRS Party and relinquish my membership. I want to extend my deepest appreciation for the support and endorsement extended by the party during my tenure,” he said.

Hours after his resignation, Mr Reddy joined the Congress in the presence of Telangana CM Revanth Reddy and other senior party leaders.

K Chandrasekhar Rao, who is commonly known as KCR, has seen some of his party’s MPs switching over to other parties in the past few weeks.

Earlier on March 16, BRS MP from Warangal Pasunoori Dayakar joined the ruling Congress.

Recently, BRS MPs from Zaheerabad and Nagarkurnool, BB Patil and P Ramulu respectively, had joined the BJP.

After losing the most recent Telangana assembly elections, the BRS has been in decline and has been finding it difficult to field candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Conversely, the BJP has been considering the induction of leaders from other parties due to a lack of candidates.

Just one day after joining the party, BB Patil from Zaheerabad was fielded. Days after his father, P Ramulu, quit from the KCR-led BRS, the BJP also nominated Bharat Prasad for the Nagarkurnool (SC reserved) seat.

Telangana will hold elections on May 13.

Amaravati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Sunday evening address a grand National Democratic Alliance rally ‘Prajagalam,’ (the voice of the public) in Palnadu district, the first joint public meeting of NDA partners in Andhra Pradesh after ten years. Modi will be joined by TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu and Janasena chief Pawan Kalyan in the public meeting, and this is the first time all the three leaders will share the stage in a rally for the 2024 polls.

Named Prajagalam, the meeting will mark the first NDA election meeting in Andhra Pradesh in the run-up to the simultaneous Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha polls scheduled on May 13.

Janasena said Prajagalam is aimed at “chasing away atrocious politics” for the golden future of Andhra Pradesh. The TDP, Janasena and BJP are mobilising their cadres in large numbers for the meeting.

In preparation for the meeting, the TDP released a special logo featuring the images of Modi, Naidu and Kalyan. The NDA partners finalised their seat-sharing formula for the Lok Sabha and state polls following a marathon discussion held at Naidu’s Andhra Pradesh residence in Undavalli on March 11, under which the BJP will contest six Lok Sabha and 10 assembly seats while the TDP will fight in 17 parliamentary and 144 state seats.

The Janasena has announced seven candidates so far, with Kalyan fighting the assembly election from Pithapuram constituency. The BJP is yet to announce its list of its candidates for the polls.

Naidu said days ago that under the dynamic and visionary leadership of PM Modi, the BJP, Janasena and TDP have decided to contest the Lok Sabha and assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh together.

“We are committed to the progress and development of Andhra Pradesh and the upliftment of the people of our state. We are committed to the development of our nation, aspiring for India to rise as a global leader,” he had said.

Naidu said the NDA partners agreed to make the interests of the state and its future the utmost priority and a key driving factor during seat-sharing discussions. According to a schedule shared by the TDP, Modi is expected to land at Gannavaram Airport by 4.10 pm after embarking on a special flight from Delhi.

The PM will take a helicopter from Gannavaram Airport to reach Palnadu district and he will arrive at the meeting venue in Boppudi village around 5 pm. From 5 pm to 6 pm, the prime minister will take part in the election meeting, after which he will depart for Hyderabad.

Ahmedabad: A mob carrying sticks and knives stormed a Gujarat University hostel and attacked foreign students from African countries, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan for allegedly offering namaz. The incident took place when students gathered inside the hostel to offer a namaz offered at night during Ramazan. The angry mob not only attacked the students but also damaged their laptops, phones and bikes.

The videos from the Gujarat University campus have been shared widely on social media. In the viral videos, the unidentified men can be seen attacking the students kicking their two-wheelers and damaging them. LiveMint couldn’t independently verify the authenticity of the videos.

The videos shared on social media also show accused people throwing stones at the hostel and hurling abuses at the foreign students. Whereas, students can be heard saying that they are “scared” and that what happened “is unacceptable”

Neerajkumar Badgujar, the additional commissioner of police (crime) for Ahmedabad city, confirmed that an FIR has been filed and assured that the attackers will be arrested soon. About the injured foreign students, Badgujar said only one remains hospitalised, while the others have already been treated and discharged.

“Last night around 11 pm, 10-15 persons from outside came into our hostel campus. Three of them entered our hostel building while we were offering namaz. They told us we were not allowed to do so here and shouted slogans of Jai Shri Ram. They pushed the security guard out and then attacked the people offering namaz. When other non-Muslim foreign national students came to our help, they were also attacked. Their rooms were ransacked, and laptops, mobile phones and mirrors were damaged. Five students, including two from South Africa and one each from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Sri Lanka, have been injured,” recounted a student from Afghanistan who was present during the incident. The student claimed that the police reached the spot after the intruders had fled.

Gujarat home minister Harsh Sanghavi has convened an urgent meeting with senior officials, including the director general of police (DGP) of Gujarat Police and the joint commissioner of police (JCP) of the crime branch, to address the matter, said an official.

Gujarat University police station PI SR Bava said they were investigating the matter and refused to divulge more details at this stage. The five injured students have been shifted to SVP Hospital.
