Bengaluru: CM Siddaramaiah trains guns on PM Modi, asks why farmers should back BJP

Bengaluru: Even as PM Narendra Modi is arriving in Shivamogga for the BJP election campaign on March 18, CM Siddaramaiah trained his guns on BJP, Modi and B S Yediyurappa and pointedly asked why farmers of Karnataka must support BJP.

Attacking senior BJP leader Yediyurappa, the CM has asked the Prime minister how he can ask the farmers and people to vote for BJP and whether his conscience permits him to ask for votes to elect Yediyurappa’s son, B Y Raghavendra, knowing fully well that innocent farmers were killed in police firing when they asked for fertilisers.

The CM said he has no problem in welcoming Modi in Shivamogga, the cradle of farmers’ movement, and reminded the prime minister that Yediyurappa had promised to waive farm loans before the assembly elections and had the audacity to tell the farmers, who reminded him of BJP’s promise on farm loan waiver, that his government does not have note printing machines.

When farmers were agitating over fertiliser supplies in Haveri, the Yediyurappa government had taken the lives of innocent farmers by opening fire, he said.

Siddaramaiah asked why the farmers in the State must support BJP when the party had refused to honour the promises in respect of irrigation projects in the State and demanded the release of funds for drought relief and increase the number of man-days under Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee scheme from the present 100 to 150 days to prevent migration of farmers in search of jobs due to scarcity conditions.

The chief minister said the BJP in the 2018 election manifesto had promised to waive farm loans up to Rs 1 lac in all nationalised banks in the first cabinet meeting after the party comes to power. But once in power, the party had betrayed farmers by forgetting its promise to farmers

“Karnataka has been reeling under drought conditions and the government has declared 226 taluks in the State as drought affected six months ago and the government had requested immediate release of Rs 18,177 crore as drought relief as per Central norms. I have written several letters and have personally met you and Home Minister Amit Shah. But not a single naya paise has been released by the Centre. Why this hatred against Karnataka’s farmers?’’ he asked.

The chief minister said the Centre had allocated Rs 5,300 crore for the Upper Bhadra irrigation project in its budget one year ago but nothing has been released so far. Mahadayi and Mekedatu projects are languishing due to non-cooperation from the Centre. The Modi regime abandoned the state in the Cauvery issue by not framing the distress sharing formula.

Siddaramaiah pointed out that Modi regime had hurriedly passed the three controversial farm loans which in effect handed over the agriculture sector to Adani, Ambani and other capitalists. Over 750 farmers lost their lives due to police atrocities, ill-health and vagaries of monsoon.

“Will you guarantee justice to the farming community?” asked Siddarmaiah to the prime minister.

Bengaluru: The Congress has contacted MP DV Sadananda Gowda, who has lost his ticket for Bengaluru North Lok Sabha constituency, and he has said that he will announce his decision tomorrow.

DV Sadananda Gowda, who had said that he will not contest the election this time, was requested by some BJP leaders to contest the election. After this, he also claimed to be a ticket aspirant.

Sadananda Gowda is upset after announcing the ticket to Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje. Gowda, who complained that ‘because he missed the ticket, it was unfair to the Okkaliga community’, has now said that he will announce his decision in a press conference on Tuesday.

“BJP leaders came to my house yesterday and tried to convince me. I need to discuss with my family members. Congress leaders also contacted me,” he said.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 18 launched a scathing attack on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for his ‘Shakti’ remark and said he worships it in all forms.

“The INDIA bloc, in their manifesto, said that their fight is against ‘Shakti’. For me, every mother, daughter & sister is a form of ‘Shakti’. I worship them in the form of ‘Shakti’. I am the worshiper of Bharat Mata,” PM Modi said during a public rally in Telangana’s Jagtial.

Hitting out at the opposition INDIA bloc, he said that the upcoming Lok Sabha election is a battle between ‘Shakti’ supporters and those who are fighting against it.

“I am the worshiper of Bharat Mata… Their (INDIA bloc’s) manifesto is to finish ‘Shakti’, and I accept the challenge. I am willing to sacrifice my life for Nari Shakti,” PM Modi said. During a public rally in Mumbai to mark the conclusion of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday raised concerns about EVMS, using the word ‘Shakti’ to emphasize the opposition’s fight against it.

“There is a word ‘Shakti’ in Hinduism. We are fighting against a Shakti. The question is, what is that Shakti? The soul of the King is in the EVM. This is true. The soul of the King is in the EVM and in every institution of the country, in ED, CBI, and the Income Tax department,” he said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed him and the INDIA bloc for their hatred against Hinduism and Hindu beliefs. The Prime Minister claimed that the support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is increasing every passing day.

“The support for BJP is increasing continuously, and the public gathering here in Jagtial is testimony to that. As the voting day nears there is a BJP wave in Telangana. The whole country is saying, “more than 400 (seats for NDA) on June 4 (counting day),” he added.

During his address, PM Modi also said that Congress crushed the dreams of Telangana, while BRS misused people’s faith.

Taking a jibe at BRS leader K Kavitha, who was recently arrested in connection with the liquor scam, PM Modi said that BRS has been ruthlessly looting Telangana since its formation and now, Congress has made the state its ‘personal ATM’ and uses people’s hard-earned money to fund its divisive policies.

On March 18, the PM will address rallies in Shivamogga in Karnataka and Telangana’s Jagtial, besides holding a roadshow in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu

Ahead of his multiple engagements in the region on March 18, PM Narendra Modi said that there is “exceptional fervour” in favour of the NDA in the south, where the BJP is making all efforts to make significant gains in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

On March 18, the PM will address rallies in Shivamogga in Karnataka and Telangana’s Jagtial, besides holding a roadshow in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.

“I will be addressing rallies in Jagtial and Shivamogga today. Later in the evening, will join the roadshow in Coimbatore. Be it Telangana, Karnataka or Tamil Nadu, there is exceptional fervour in the NDA’s favour,” Modi said in a post on social media platform X.

The Prime Minister’s rally in Shivamogga, which is former Chief Minister and BJP Parliamentary board member B S Yediyurappa’s home turf, comes at a time when disgruntled party leader K S Eshwarappa has announced plans to contest as an independent from the Shimoga constituency after his son was denied a ticket for the Haveri seat.

Modi’s rally in Jagtial, part of the Nizamabad constituency, is expected to have an impact on the neighbouring Karimnagar seat, both of which were won by BJP in 2019. The party is looking to better its tally of four out of 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana, in 2024.

In Coimbatore, the Prime Minister’s roadshow comes after the party had to approach the Madras High Court for allowing the event after the local police denied permission citing “communally sensitive” nature of the area and ongoing public exams as reasons.

The district has favoured the BJP in the past, electing present Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan twice to the Lok Sabha in the 90s and voting the party’s National President of the women’s wing leader Vanathi Srinivasan to the Tamil Nadu Assembly in 2021.

The three rallies are an indication of BJP’s fervent efforts to make deep political inroads in the southern states in a bid to achieve its stated goal of 400 Lok Sabha seats in this election.

The party is aiming to make a good haul of the available 131 Lok Sabha seats in the five southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, besides the Puducherry and Lakshadweep union territories.

Patna: Seven people including three children were killed and four others have been injured after a car returning from a wedding collided with a tractor in Bihar’s Khagaria district on March 18.

The accident occurred at Vidya Ratan fuel station located at NH 31 under Pasraha police station in the district, at 6.30 a.m.

Sanjay Vishwas, SHO of Pasraha police station confirmed that seven persons died on the spot. The police team rescued the injured persons and admitted them to the hospital.

The victims were returning from a wedding in Chautham Thuddi village under Maraiya police station in the district on Sunday night. On their way back, they met with the accident.

The impact of the accident was as such that the SUV was completely mangled from the front and was pushed away from the road. The victims are relatives of a person named Indradev Thakur of Besha village. The deceased are not yet identified.
