New Delhi: The Election Commission today announced the dates for the Lok Sabha elections. Voting for the Lok Sabha elections will begin on April 19 and the results will be announced on June 4, the Election Commission said.

According to the announcement, Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka will take place across 7 phases. The first phase is scheduled for April 19, followed by the second phase on April 26, the third phase on May 7, and the fourth phase on May 13. Subsequently, the fifth phase will occur on May 20, the sixth phase on May 25, and the seventh phase on June 1. The deadline for withdrawal of candidature is set for March 30, with votes slated to be counted on June 4.

The poll schedule for four state Assemblies – Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim – were also declared.

Besides this, bypolls to 26 Assembly seats will be held in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Tripura, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.

The Elections for Dakshina Kannada will be conducted on April 26, while the second phase for other parts of Karnataka state is scheduled for May 7.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, flanked by the two newly appointed Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, said elections would be held in seven phases. In 2019, elections were also held in seven phases.

The Lok Sabha elections 2024 will be held at 10.5 lakh polling stations from April 19 to June 1 and counting of votes will be held on June 4.

The first phase of polling will be conducted on April 19, the second phase will be held on April 26, the third phase on May 7, the fourth phase on May 13, the fifth phase on May 20, the sixth phase on May 25, and the seventh and final phase will be held on June 1.

The current tenure of the 17th Lok Sabha ends on June 24.

There was also a great deal of popular anticipation as to whether polls for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly would be synchronised with the parliamentary election. That, however, has not happened, perhaps due to considerations relating to the security situation in the region.

The Supreme Court has directed that polls for the Union Territory of J&K have to be completed by September end.

Birmingham: India’s Lakshya Sen has entered the men’s singles semi-finals of the All England Badminton Championship on Friday, March 15.

The 22-year-old Lakshya Sen defeated former champion Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia 20-22, 21-16, 21-19 in a thrilling come-from-behind win in a match that spanned for an hour and 10 minutes at the United Arena in Birmingham.

CThe 22-year-old lost the first game 20-22 despite making a valiant comeback towards the end. He bounced back in the second game, with a commanding 21-16 win win and tied the match.

In the nail-biting decider, Lakshya held his nerves to seal a 21-19 win and book his place in the All England Open semi-final for the second time in his career. He will face Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the semi-final on March 16 at 3:30 PM IST.

Lakshya, watched on by his mentor Prakash Padukone, put on a gutsy show against former champion Lee to keep India’s hopes of producing an All England Open champion for the first time in 23 years alive. Only Padukone (1981) and Pullela Gopichand (2001) have won All England crowns for India in the past.

Lakshya Sen is the only Indian left in the fray in the All England Open after a shocking second-round exit for World No. 1 doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu went down in straight games against top seed An Se Young in the women’s singles second round on Thursday.

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi moves Supreme Court against CAA implementation

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen(AIAIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on March 16 approached the Supreme Court seeking to stay the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 and the Rules, 2024. The Centre on March 11 implemented the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, notifying the rules four years after the contentious law was passed by Parliament to fast-track citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014.

Owaisi said no applications seeking grant of citizenship status be entertained or processed by the government under Section 6B of the Citizenship Act,1955 (as it stands amended by the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019) during the pendency of the proceedings.

Owaisi claimed that CAA should be seen together with NPR (National Population Register) and NRC (National Register of Citizens).

Stating that he is not against giving citizenship to Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, he said, “You are making this law, because, when you do NPR and NRC in the country in the future, you want to make the 17 crore Muslims in India stateless,” he alleged. The people of Hyderabad would vote against the CAA and defeat BJP in the elections, Owaisi said.

New Delhi: Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, BJP has launched a new campaign: a song on the theme ‘Main Modi ka Parivar Hun’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shared this song on his X account and has captioned it: “Mera Bharat, Mera Parivaar.” This comes the very day the Election Commission will announce the dates for the upcoming general elections.

The three minutes 13 seconds long video features Prime Minister Modi interacting with several people who appear to be beneficiaries of various welfare schemes announced by the Central government. The song also shows people from all sections of society connecting with the Prime Minister through these schemes and how the nation has progressed under his leadership over the past decade.

The lyrics of the song go: “He lives in the house of my heart, always cares about me…He understands my pain and suffering, remains involved in my happiness…He is not standing alone here, I am his world…I am Modi’s family.”

The campaign song depicts the faith people have in Prime Minister Modi and BJP’s poll mantra ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’.

The slogan ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Parivaar’ was coined by the Prime Minister in response to a personal remark made by an opposition leader.
