Bantwal: Collision between Container lorry and Private bus; The lorry driver was seriously injured

Bantwal: An accident between a container lorry and a private bus in front of the Vaidyanath temple on Bantwala College Road on Mar.9. The lorry driver was seriously injured in the collision.

The injured lorry driver has been admitted to a private hospital in Mangalore. There were several passengers, including students in the private bus who escaped with minor injuries.

The incident took place when a container lorry going from B.C. Road towards Moodbidri collided head-on with a private bus coming from Moodbidri towards Bantwal. The front portions of both vehicles were significantly damaged in the accident. Bantwal traffic police have visited the scene of the incident.

Sullia: Ajitesh P S Permuka appointed as Lieutenant in Indian Army

Ajitesh PS Permukh, a resident of Noochila, Subrahmanya village, has been appointed as a lieutenant in the Army.

Ajitesh completed his primary and secondary education at Kumaraswamy Vidyalaya, Subramanya. His Pre-University education at Vivekananda College, Puttur, BSc in Forestry from Ponnampet College, Madikeri and then second MSc from Forest Research Institute, Dehradun. Ajitesh had cleared the Army recruitment examination and had undergone training at the Indian Army Officers’ Training Institute in Chennai for a year.

Ajitesh is the son of Vidyarathna, headmaster of Kumaraswamy Educational Institution, Subramanya and Srikrishna Sharma P, retired headmaster of Bilinele Sri Gopalakrishna High School.

Election commissioner Arun Goel steps down weeks before Lok Sabha elections

Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigned from his post on March 9, weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Goel’s resignation has been accepted by the President.

The Union Law Ministry said in a notification that the President had accepted Goel’s resignation. It was not immediately known that why he resigned.

A retired bureaucrat, was a 1985-batch IAS officer of the Punjab cadre. He had joined the Election Commission in November 2022. Following the retirement of Anup Pandey in February and Goel’s resignation, the three-member Election Commission panel has now only Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.

This significant development has come just a week ahead of the expected announcement of Lok Sabha elections schedule.

Prime Minister Modi inaugurates world’s longest twin-lane tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the state-of-the-art Sela Tunnel in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh on March 9. Built with a total cost of Rs 825 crore, the tunnel project is constructed at an altitude of 13,700 feet in West Kameng district on the road connecting Tezpur to Tawang. The foundation stone of the project was laid by PM Modi in February 2019, but its completion was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Done by the Border Road Organisation, the Sela project consists of two tunnels and a link road. Tunnel 1 will be 980-metre long single-tube, Tunnel 2 will be 1,555-metre with one bi-lane tube for traffic and one emergency services. The link road between the two tunnels will be 1,200 meters long.

The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity to the Tawang region — long contested by China which describes it as a part of the ancient territory. Sela Pass stays closed for a few winter months. In 1962, Chinese troops had clashed with Indian forces in the region, and significantly, Tawang town was overrun on October 24 that year.

The tunnel will enhance the Indian army’s capabilities at the LAC by ensuing speedy deployment of troops, weapons and machinery to the forward areas along the Sino-India border.

Katapadi: The car lost control and fell into the ditch

Udupi: In a tragic incident, a car in which the driver lost control and fell into a ditch on national highway 66 near Katapadi in Kaup taluk on On Mar.9. Fortunately, the driver of the car escaped unhurt with minor injuries.

The car was on its way to Mangaluru from Udupi when the driver lost control of the car and fell into a nearby ditch after the driver lost control of the vehicle near Kallapu in Katpadi.

There was no major loss of life as the driver was alone in the car. The driver, who was injured in the incident, has been admitted to a hospital by locals.

Congress Releases First List of 39 Candidates for 2024 Lok Sabha Polls

The Congress party released its initial list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. including Rahul Gandhi, who will contest from Wayanad. The list also includes former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor.

In this initial list of 39 candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 15 fall under the General category, while 24 represent SC, ST, OBC, and minority groups. The candidates span different age groups, with 12 below 50 years, 8 aged between 50 and 60, 12 in the 61-70 age range, and 7 in the 71-76 age group.

Speaking during the press conference, senior leader Ajay Maken said the first list is a mix of both young, experienced candidates and leaders from the Youth Congress.

The names of Congress candidates for 39 Lok Sabha seats for the Lok Sabha Elections were announced in the meeting of the ‘Central Election Committee’ held under the chairmanship of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

“Congress party is very clear: we are here to reduce BJP seats to the maximum extent possible. We are ready to sacrifice anything to reduce BJP seats.
