On March 18, the PM will address rallies in Shivamogga in Karnataka and Telangana’s Jagtial, besides holding a roadshow in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu

Ahead of his multiple engagements in the region on March 18, PM Narendra Modi said that there is “exceptional fervour” in favour of the NDA in the south, where the BJP is making all efforts to make significant gains in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

On March 18, the PM will address rallies in Shivamogga in Karnataka and Telangana’s Jagtial, besides holding a roadshow in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.

“I will be addressing rallies in Jagtial and Shivamogga today. Later in the evening, will join the roadshow in Coimbatore. Be it Telangana, Karnataka or Tamil Nadu, there is exceptional fervour in the NDA’s favour,” Modi said in a post on social media platform X.

The Prime Minister’s rally in Shivamogga, which is former Chief Minister and BJP Parliamentary board member B S Yediyurappa’s home turf, comes at a time when disgruntled party leader K S Eshwarappa has announced plans to contest as an independent from the Shimoga constituency after his son was denied a ticket for the Haveri seat.

Modi’s rally in Jagtial, part of the Nizamabad constituency, is expected to have an impact on the neighbouring Karimnagar seat, both of which were won by BJP in 2019. The party is looking to better its tally of four out of 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana, in 2024.

In Coimbatore, the Prime Minister’s roadshow comes after the party had to approach the Madras High Court for allowing the event after the local police denied permission citing “communally sensitive” nature of the area and ongoing public exams as reasons.

The district has favoured the BJP in the past, electing present Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan twice to the Lok Sabha in the 90s and voting the party’s National President of the women’s wing leader Vanathi Srinivasan to the Tamil Nadu Assembly in 2021.

The three rallies are an indication of BJP’s fervent efforts to make deep political inroads in the southern states in a bid to achieve its stated goal of 400 Lok Sabha seats in this election.

The party is aiming to make a good haul of the available 131 Lok Sabha seats in the five southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, besides the Puducherry and Lakshadweep union territories.

Patna: Seven people including three children were killed and four others have been injured after a car returning from a wedding collided with a tractor in Bihar’s Khagaria district on March 18.

The accident occurred at Vidya Ratan fuel station located at NH 31 under Pasraha police station in the district, at 6.30 a.m.

Sanjay Vishwas, SHO of Pasraha police station confirmed that seven persons died on the spot. The police team rescued the injured persons and admitted them to the hospital.

The victims were returning from a wedding in Chautham Thuddi village under Maraiya police station in the district on Sunday night. On their way back, they met with the accident.

The impact of the accident was as such that the SUV was completely mangled from the front and was pushed away from the road. The victims are relatives of a person named Indradev Thakur of Besha village. The deceased are not yet identified.

Mangaluru Police Commissionerate Issues Externment Orders to 7 Individuals

Mangaluru: In an effort To conduct the Lok Sabha elections 2024 peacefully and fairly, the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate has implemented preventive measures to maintain public peace and order.

As part of this, Externment orders have been issued under the Karnataka Police Act, against 7 individuals who have criminal backgrounds and externed them from Dakshina Kannada district for 3 months. Furthermore, as a measure to keep peace and maintain good behaviour, a security bond was imposed for one year on 286 individuals who were habitual offenders and likely to Commit a breach of the peace.

New Delhi: ECI releases fresh data on funding to political parties through electoral bonds

ECI ಮಾರ್ಚ್ 17ಕ್ಕ್ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಪಕ್ಷರ್ದ್ ಚುನಾವಣಾ ಬಾಂಡ್‌ದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ದೆತೊಂದಿನ ಡೇಟಾನ್ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಲ್ತ್ಂಡ್.

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on March 17 released data received from political parties on electoral bonds, which it had given to the Supreme Court in sealed covers. The ECI in a statement said: “Political parties had filed data on Electoral Bonds in a sealed cover as directed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s interim order dated April 12, 2019, in the said WP No. 880 of 2017. Data so received from political parties was deposited in the Hon’ble Supreme Court without opening sealed covers. In pursuance of the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s order on March 15, 2024, the Registry of the Supreme Court has returned physical copies along with a digitised record of the same in a pen drive in a sealed cover.”

“The Election Commission of India has today uploaded the data received in digitised form from the registry of the Supreme Court on electoral bonds on its website,” the EC added.

In fact, the last documents which were released by the ECI show only raw data related to the date of the bonds, denominations, number of bonds branch of SBI issuing the data, date of receipt and date of credit. The documents did not, however, then disclose the unique numbers of the bonds.

The Trinamool Congress has written to SBI asking for the unique numbers of the bonds so that the party can comply with the Supreme Court’s directions. The BJP has not given any such request to SBI. However, the party has given raw data. Likewise, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has denied getting “any donation via electoral bonds”. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also denied receiving donations via electoral bonds. However, the Congress said it will release raw data given by SBI to the EC.

Setback to KCR: Another BRS MP resigns ahead of Lok Sabha polls

Ranjith Reddy, a member of parliament from Chevella, left the Bharat Rashtra Samithi(BRS) on March 17 and joined the ruling Congress, dealing another setback to former Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao.

He announced his(unexpected but not unexpected) resignation on his official X account, citing “current political circumstances” as his reason. On the microblogging site, he additionally posted his resignation letter.

“I would like to convey my sincere appreciation for the party’s priceless opportunity to discuss and find solutions for the pressing problems affecting the people living in the former Vikarabad and Ranga Reddy Districts. In his letter of resignation to Mr. Rao, Mr. Reddy stated, “Your faith in my abilities has enabled me to effectively serve the constituents of Chevella, my parliamentary constituency.”

“I am sincerely thankful for your steadfast support throughout this journey. Unfortunately, due to the current political circumstances in the state of Telangana, I have come to the difficult decision to pursue an alternative path. It is with a heavy heart that I hereby submit my resignation from the BRS Party and relinquish my membership. I want to extend my deepest appreciation for the support and endorsement extended by the party during my tenure,” he said.

Hours after his resignation, Mr Reddy joined the Congress in the presence of Telangana CM Revanth Reddy and other senior party leaders.

K Chandrasekhar Rao, who is commonly known as KCR, has seen some of his party’s MPs switching over to other parties in the past few weeks.

Earlier on March 16, BRS MP from Warangal Pasunoori Dayakar joined the ruling Congress.

Recently, BRS MPs from Zaheerabad and Nagarkurnool, BB Patil and P Ramulu respectively, had joined the BJP.

After losing the most recent Telangana assembly elections, the BRS has been in decline and has been finding it difficult to field candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Conversely, the BJP has been considering the induction of leaders from other parties due to a lack of candidates.

Just one day after joining the party, BB Patil from Zaheerabad was fielded. Days after his father, P Ramulu, quit from the KCR-led BRS, the BJP also nominated Bharat Prasad for the Nagarkurnool (SC reserved) seat.

Telangana will hold elections on May 13.
