Mangalore: As Prime Minister Modi gears up for his participation in the road show from Narayana Guru Circle to Navabharath Circle on April 14, the city’s police commissioner has issued traffic diversions to ensure smooth movement and security arrangements during the event.

Bharathesha Alasandemajalu has been chosen to represent the Tulu and Kannada languages at the Wikimedia Summit 2024, scheduled to take place in Berlin, Germany, from April 19 to 22.

A dedicated member of the Karavali Wikimedians User Group in Mangaluru, he will serve as an ambassador for these languages.

Joining over 150 multilingual individuals from more than 100 countries, Bharathesha will participate in various activities, including discussions on ratifying Wiki Moment 2030, attending User Group representative meetings, and addressing challenges related to regional languages. Born and raised in Alasandemajalu, Perlampady, Puttur Taluk, Bharatesha is the son of Bojappa Gowda A and Girija A B.

Currently employed at the Bank of Baroda, he has previously been associated with the Karnataka Arebhashe Samskriti mattu Sahitya Academy.

Notably, Bharathesha collaborated with the Wikimedia Foundation to create “Pursa Kattuna,” Tulu’s inaugural research documentary, which garnered recognition at international film festivals.

With expertise in Tulu and Kannada writing, he remains committed to making significant contributions to the preservation of language and culture through meticulous archiving efforts.

Excise raid on BJP leader’s house: One arrested; Military liquor seized

As per the guidance of Excise Joint Commissioner, Mangalore Division and Excise Deputy Commissioner, Udupi District, this excise raid took place on the house of Ramesh Prabhu at Brahmavar Indira Nagar under Udupi Vidhan Sabha Constituency. Ramesh Prabhu’s son is the leader of BJP Udupi District Yuva Morcha.

A total of 33.500 liters of defense liquor was found when the excise raided on the information that liquor was being stored illegally in the house, which is estimated to be worth Rs 1,55,000. Ramesh Prabhu has been arrested.

Mangalore: A devastating fire engulfed a house on April 6 near Juma Masjid in Bunder, Mangalore. The blaze, which broke out around 11:15 am, consumed the entire old tiled house, where six families resided in a single-story building. Fortunately, all the occupants managed to evacuate the premises safely, and there were no casualties reported.

Promptly responding to the emergency, personnel from the Pandeshwar fire service arrived at the scene with two fire service vehicles. Their swift action helped bring the fire under control and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings.

Initial investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit triggered the fire. The residents, observing Ramzan fasting, were still asleep until around 11 am when passersby noticed smoke billowing from the house’s roof. Alerted by the onlookers, the occupants quickly evacuated the premises.

Unfortunately, the fire ravaged all the belongings inside the house, leaving nothing but ashes. Sajina, one of the family members affected by the tragedy, expressed their dire situation, stating that they lacked even basic amenities like a pot for drinking water. They appealed to the district administration for assistance in this challenging time.

Beltangady: The Dharmasthala police have arrested five accused in connection with the theft of diesel worth Rs. nine lac from a pipeline belonging to a petroleum company at Aladka in the Puduvettu village of the taluk.

The arrested individuals are identified as Dinesh Gowda(40) and Mohan(28), both residents of Puduvettu village; Jaya Suvarna(39), a resident of Nelyadi in Kaukradi village of Kadaba; Dinesh(40), residing in Harehalli in Belur taluk of Hassan; and Kartik(28), a resident of Kadaba village.

The accused were apprehended by the police on April 1 in Nelyadi. They were subsequently presented in court and remanded to four days of police custody. On April 4, they were produced again in the Beltangady court and were further remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.

Police seized a Maruti 800 car used in the crime, along with 100 litres of diesel, pipes, a drilling machine, a winding machine, and mobile phones from the suspects. The operation involved CI Vasant Achar of the Beltangady police station, SI Anil Kumar of the Dharmasthala police station, Samarth R Ganigera and other personnel.

The squad received a specific tip-off and swiftly moved in to confiscate biriyani that was being prepared to distribute to approximately 2000 workers gathered at the event.

Despite the anticipation of the workers and the near-completion of the meal, the Election Commission vigilance squad refused to permit the distribution of the biriyani.

Disappointed by the turn of events, the party workers, who had patiently awaited the meal, eventually dispersed without partaking in the biriyani.

Mangalore: The authorities have seized 12,844 litres of liquor worth Rs.41,90,665 in Dakshina Kannada district up to April 1 from the date of enforcement of Model Code of Conduct.

Apart from liquor 15.5kg drugs valued at Rs.8,69,950 have been seized. As many as 243 FIRs have been registered including cases for violation of excise rules.
