Bengaluru: A lot at stake for three former Karnataka CMs in Lok Sabha election fray

Bengaluru: Victory is essential for three former Chief Ministers of Karnataka who are contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections, as any electoral setback can push them to the political backstage from the frontline.

Three former Chief Ministers of Karnataka

The trio in question — former BJP Chief Ministers Basavaraj Bommai and Jagadish Shettar, and ex-CM H.D. Kumaraswamy of the JD-S — is expected to play big roles in national politics. Bommai is contesting the Haveri Lok Sabha seat, Shettar has been fielded from Belagavi, while Kumaraswamy is the NDA nominee from Mandya.

The involvement of former Chief Ministers has turned these constituencies into high-profile seats, where it has become a matter of prestige for the supporters of these three prominent leaders to ensure their victory.

For Kumaraswamy, winning the elections is crucial, especially after his party stitched an alliance with the BJP-led NDA with both parties announcing that the tie-up is not confined to the Lok Sabha polls only as they will continue to fight the Congress together in the days to come.

Kumaraswamy, whose nomination is aimed at boosting the prospects of the NDA candidates in southern Karnataka, is pitted against industrialist Venkataramane Gowda of the Congress.

While many feel that the chances of Gowda, a fresh face in electoral politics, look slim against a seasoned politician like Kumaraswamy, Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress President D.K. Shivakumar is backing his party nominee to hand defeat to the former Chief Minister in Mandya.

In case of an unfavorable verdict, Kumaraswamy might lose his bargaining power significantly with the BJP’s national leadership. It would also mean that the Vokkaliga community, which forms the core support base for the JD-S, is no longer backing him with Shivakumar emerging as their preferred choice.

With some of his close confidantes joining the Congress and taking pot-shots at his family, Kumaraswamy wants to redeem his frontline position in state politics and a victory in Mandya will give him the much-needed boost. The elections are also crucial for Jagadish Shettar, as a defeat in Belagavi might signal the end of his political career.

Shettar, who had quit the BJP ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections, rejoined the party in January this year. In Belagavi, he faces Mrinal Hebbalkar of the Congress, a fresh face in electoral politics and the son of state minister Laxmi Hebbalkar, who’s known to be close to Shivakumar.

Upping the ante against the former Chief Minister, Shivakumar has claimed that Shettar’s plight will be miserable in a couple of months when he will repent his decision to return to the BJP. The upcoming elections are also crucial for the political career of Basavaraj Bommai.

To recall, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had declared last year that the Assembly elections will be fought under the leadership of Bommai. However, the party later decided to contest under the collective leadership of the BJP.

Sources close to Bommai said that he has been handpicked by the party high command for his abilities such as language fluency, oratory skills, and political knowledge.

Known for defending the party’s stands with facts on the floor of the Assembly, Bommai is likely to be offered an important role if the BJP retains power at the Centre, and the former CM wins from Haveri.

However, a defeat can cause a setback to his political career as many young contenders are vying for important roles in the BJP.

Bommai is up against Congress’ Anandswamy Gaddadevarmath in Haveri.

Petition filed in Delhi High Court to disqualify PM Narendra Modi from elections for 6 years

A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by soliciting votes in the name of “gods and places of worship” for the Lok Sabha elections.

A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi

The petition was filed by advocate Anand S Jondhale, refers to Modi’s speech in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh on April 9, where Modi allegedly sought votes in the name of “god and place of worship” and “Hindu deities and Hindu place of worships as well as Sikh deities and Sikh place of worship” while campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls

The petition has sought disqualification of PM Modi from contesting any elections for six years.

In his petition, Jondhale stated, “That Respondent No.2 [Modi] said that he has constructed the Ram Temple. Respondent No.2 also stated that he developed Kartarpur Sahib Corridor and removed GST from material used in Langars served in Gurudwaras. The Respondent No.2 also said that he had brought back the copies of Guru Granth Sahib from Afghanistan.”

The petitioners also alleges that Modi made comments against opposite political parties as favoring Muslims, which, according to Jondhale, creates hatred and promotes disharmony. Jondhale further contended that PM Modi not only sought votes in the name of Hindu and Sikh deities and their places of worship but also violated the MCC by making comments against political opponents.

Meanwhile, Modi, concluding his Lok Sabha poll campaign at a rally in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, made a Tamil-centric pitch as he proposed to set up Thiruvalluvar centres globally, and labelled the Congress and DMK “sinners” over “ceding” Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka. Modi dubbed the DMK and Congress “anti-national” and said the entire country has now understood the “truth,” that they had given Katchatheevu to another country after “cutting it off” from Tamil Nadu.

The petitioner stated that even though he approached the Election Commission of India (ECI) with a prayer to register FIR against the Prime Minister under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and to disqualify Modi from contesting elections for six years, the Commission took no action.

Bengaluru: Cong’s election manifesto will just remain an irrelevant piece of paper: Jaishankar

Bengaluru: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on April 15 said that there was no need to bother about the election manifesto of the Congress as it will become just a piece of paper with no relevance after the BJP registers victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on April 15 said that there was no need to bother about the election manifesto of the Congress

The Union Minister said this while answering a question about Congress’ claims that “if BJP gets 400 seats, it will change the Constitution”. EAM Jaishankar said that it was a matter of happiness that the Congress agreed that the BJP would cross 400 seats this time.

“We will put that 400 to use by taking the country forward. When you see Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at above 400 seats, you will see that we are doing more service towards the people of India,” S. Jaishankar said.

“From Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister is the leader of the country. How can you (referring to Rahul Gandhi) say that you won’t accept a leader? Rahul Gandhi disrespected former PM Manmohan Singh during the UPA regime. You think you are bigger than the PM as the party is a family enterprise?” the Union Minister questioned.

Talking about BJP’s hopes in south India in the upcoming elections, EAM Jaishankar stated that his party is “genuinely optimistic”.

“The kind of response PM Modi is getting from the public in Tamil Nadu and Kerala is phenomenal. We have been in a good position in Karnataka, and also got a good hold in Telangana.

“Most importantly, from the southern states, we are seeking votes not only on the manifesto but on our 10-year’s track record and achievements. We have delivered food, electricity, water, infrastructure, and education. When you look at our track record, you will strengthen our hands as we have bigger things to do for the nation. People of these states are very much part of all that has happened in 10 years. Every programme that has happened has impacted Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It will have an impact,” EAM Jaishankar said.

He further said: “This election is extraordinarily important. We have 10 years of foundation. We are planning to do something really big in the third term.”

In a message shared on X, PM Modi conveyed, “I am deeply grateful to the people of Mangaluru and Dakshina Kannada Parliamentary constituency for their remarkable turnout during Sunday’s roadshow. The connection between this region of Karnataka and our party is deeply rooted. Over the years, the people have bestowed their blessings upon us, resonating with our commitment to effective governance and our endeavours to uphold and cherish our rich cultural heritage.”

Highlighting the significance of the recently unveiled manifesto, PM Modi emphasized its potential to catalyse development in Mangaluru, particularly in crucial areas such as urban development and enhancing quality of life. He underscored the transformative vision outlined in sectors like fisheries, poised to revitalize the coastal economy.

In a firm stance against the opposition, PM Modi asserted, “Dakshina Kannada cannot afford to support the Congress, which indulges in divisive vote bank politics. The Congress-led government in Karnataka is mired in internal strife, misappropriation of public funds, and obstructing progress. Their disconnect with Karnataka’s cultural ethos is evident.”

PM Modi’s grand roadshow in Mangaluru, held on Sunday evening in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections, spanned a 2-kilometer route from Brahmashree Narayan Guru Circle to Navbharath Circle, resonating with enthusiastic participation from the locals.
