New Delhi: As the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls began on April 19, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge urged voters to cast their ballots carefully and asserted that a new era of economic empowerment and equal opportunities beckons them. “The fight to protect our Constitution and Democracy begins today,” he said in a post on ‘X’.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge

“My dear citizens, from 21 States and UTs who are voting in the First Phase of the Lok Sabha elections, I request you to carefully cast your vote. A future where NYAY (justice) awaits you. A new era of Economic Empowerment and Equal Opportunities beckons you,” the Congress chief said.

“I am sure you will vote for the ‘jobs revolution’ through YUVA NYAY, rather than a continuation of the past 10 years of record unemployment,” Kharge said. He exuded confidence that people would vote for the guarantees of ‘NAARI NYAY’ which takes concrete measures for the financial independence of women and against the continuation of the backbreaking price rise that has reduced their household savings to a 50-year low.

“I am sure our farmers will vote for KISAAN NYAY, for a legal guarantee of MSP, rather than getting duped by Jumlas of doubling farm income. I am sure the crores of hard-working hands that build this nation, will vote for the agenda of SHRAMIK NYAY, rather than a continuation of an era that has reduced their wages and left them to walk kilometers on highways during the pandemic,” Kharge said in his post.

“I am sure our people belonging to the Dalit, Adivasi, OBC, EWS and Minority communities shall choose HISSEDARI NYAY over an era where they were discriminated through divisive politics and ever-increasing violence against them,” he said.

“When you push that button on the EVM, pause and reflect for a second – Do you want our Institutions to be subverted through dictatorship, or do you want to protect Democracy,” Kharge said.

He said voters would decide India’s destiny. Kharge also extended a warm welcome to all first-time voters. He urged people to go out and vote in large numbers.

Bengaluru: The incident of attack on three youths for reportedly raising ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans in Bengaluru has taken a political turn with Karnataka BJP leaders blaming the Congress-led state government for it.

Attack on 3 youths for raising 'Jai Shri Ram' slogans

Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shobha Karandlaje visited the residences of victims Vinayak, Rahul and Pavan in MS Palya of Bengaluru on Wednesday late night and inquired about their health.

After the visit, the Union Minister said that the victims, holding saffron flags on the occasion of Ram Navami, were travelling in a car. Near MS Palya, youth belonging to another community waylaid them and assaulted them.

“We condemn the incident. Ram Navami festival is celebrated across the country today and our youths celebrate the festival in different ways, they worship, and take out a procession. They naturally would carry saffron flags and they did not raise provocative slogans…” she said.

“The victims are saying that a group of five to six persons attacked them. I urge the police to arrest all of them,” she added.

“We will not sit quietly if there is a hand of Congress leaders from the Bengaluru North Parliamentary Constituency (in the incident). We will take up agitation… I have heard that the police are taking the issue very lightly and irresponsibly. I will immediately speak to the Police Commissioner and the DCP,” the Union Minister said.

Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka said that the incident was a result of the “appeasement by the Congress government”. People will teach a “befitting lesson” in the Lok Sabha election, he added.

Meanwhile, police have arrested two persons and detained one minor for the attack. The incident took place under the limits of the Vidyaranyapura police station in the state capital.

DCP (North East), Lakshmi Prasad, said a case has been registered in the matter under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“The youths travelling in the car holding flags had raised ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans. The accused waylaid the car and created a ruckus. The youths in the car were also assaulted. A case has been registered in this regard. The police have launched a hunt for the other accused persons who attacked the youths,” the DCP said.

Sources said the victims were returning after celebrating Ram Navami when they were attacked. In a purported video that has gone viral on social media, some bikers could be seen warning the youths against raising ‘Jai Sri Ram’ slogans, and instead asking them to chant ‘Allah Hu Akbar’.

Bengaluru: Congress will win 20 seats, won’t allow BJP-JDS to scrap guarantees, asserts DKS

Bengaluru: KPCC Chief and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Apri 17 predicted that the ruling party will win more than 20 out of the 28 seats and will never allow BJP-JDS combine to scrap the Congress government’s guarantees which have helped crores of Kannadigas.

KPCC Chief and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar

Addressing party workers at the KPCC office, Shivakumar said State BJP President B Y Vijayendra must be living in a dream world to claim that the NDA government will scrap the guarantees after coming to power for the third time at the Centre.

“All these BJP and JDS leaders like Vijayendra, H D Kumaraswamy, B S Yediyurapa and R Ashok will never be able to do anything against the Congress government’s guarantees, which have helped more than 4.5 crore out of the State’s 6 crore population,” he declared.

Shivakumar said Yediyurappa’s son and Vijayendra’s elder brother B Y Raghavendra will not be able to retain his Shivamogga seat as the enthusiasm and support extended by the people during the filing of the nomination papers by Congress candidate Geetha Shivarajkumar, daughter of former chief minister S Bangarappa.

The BJP-JDS leaders are frustrated and jealous at the Congress government’s guarantees and their impact. This has made them to make all kinds of claims and baseless criticisms against the guarantees, he said.

The KPCC Chief said the BJP is making tall claims of winning 400 plus seats in the Lok Sabha out of the 543 seats, which will never happen. “If the BJP is so confident why the BJP and NDA changed over 100 sitting MPs in the country and replace 14 sitting MPs in the State,” he asked pointing out that it indicates the nervousness of the BJP.

He said the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has claimed that BJP will not win more than 140 seats. “Rahul Gandhi has more information because he has been touring the entire country and meeting people and leaders. I know BJP will be defeated in this election,” he warned.

Shivakumar said the people are angry at the Narendra Modi government’s 10-year rule with price rise, unemployment and communal polarisation spiralling.

The BJP leaders including Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah and others, who were ridiculing the Congress guarantees, have become totally nervous and insecure after the success of the guarantees in Karnataka and Telangana. “The BJP leaders are now talking about Modi ki Guarantee without doing anything in 10 years,” he said.

The KPCC Chief indicated that he will be joining Rahul Gandhi and campaign for him in Wayanad in Kerala on Thursday. “Rahul Gandhi is a fighter and is not afraid of anybody. He works for the people and lives among the people.

Answering questions from the media, Shivakumar said the Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje does not know what she is speaking and her claim that Rahul Gandhi’s campaigning for the Congress will not affect the BJP. “If she is so confident, why did she have to run away from Chikkamagalur-Udupi and contest from Bengaluru North ousting gentleman politician D V Sadananda Gowda. She must have forgotten the go-back-Shobha campaign by her own partymen in Chikkamagaluru,” he said.
