New Delhi: The Delhi Police has strengthened security at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence after the AAP called for a “gherao” to protest against the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Security has been beefed up around the Prime Minister’s residence, police said.

protest against the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal

A large number of police personnel have been deployed at several roads in Delhi in the wake of the protests. Traffic congestion is likely to occur in some parts of New Delhi and central Delhi, a Delhi Traffic Police official said.

“Section 144 has already been enforced around the Prime Minister’s residence and No one will be allowed to protest. Several steps have also been taken to maintain law and order,” he said.

On March 26, Delhi minister Gopal Roy had announced that he would lay siege to the Prime Minister’s residence to protest against Kejriwal’s arrest. Roy had also said that he would hold a nationwide ‘mega protest’. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy. The Delhi court issued an order to remand Kejiwal in ED custody till March 28.

Arvind Kejriwal is the main conspirator in the excise policy scam. He was directly involved in the formulation of excise policy. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the ED, said Kejriwal had received several crores of kickbacks from the South Group (a company comprising arrested BRS leader K Kavitha and several others) to formulate and implement the Delhi excise policy for 2021-22.

The BJP insisted that Kejrawal should resign from the post of Chief Minister. AAP and the opposition parties, which staged protests in different parts of the country, alleged that it was a “politically motivated move”.
